Overview

  • The Indian government issues passports to the citizen of India for traveling abroad.
  • It helps the bearer to travel anywhere internationally, and even serve the proof of being an Indian citizen, by following the rules of The Passports Act of 1967.
  • The Consular Passport and Visa division of the Ministry of External Affairs is currently functioning as central passport organization.
  • It is held responsible for issuing passports on demand, to all the eligible Indian citizens.

Latest Survey in 2014

  • In India, a passport can be issued at 37 different locations and at 162 Indian diplomatic missions abroad.
  • Those diplomatic centers are embassies, High Commissions and consulates.
  • It was in the year 2014, when the survey calculated that India as issued over 10 million passports, and holds the third position, after China and the US.
  • Nearly 60 million Indians hold proper and valid passport, this day, as mentioned in the survey of November 2014.

Types of Passports

There are mainly three types of Indian passports available. Let’s get down a little about those passports.

  • The most basic one is termed as ordinary passports. It comprises of navy blue cover and with 36 or 60 pages booklet. It is issued to ordinary Indian citizens.
  • Another one is official passport, which is issued to those individuals, representing Indian government on some official businesses.
  • Diplomatic passport is the third one among the lot and provided to Indian Diplomats diplomatic couriers and top ranking government officials.

Documents Required

Any of the following documents can be submitted as address proof for Passport.

  • Valid ration card with present address
  • Election ID card with present address
  • Aadhaar card
  • Phone bill with current address
  • Gas connection
  • Bank passbook
  • Rental agreement if staying in a rented house
  • Income Tax Assessment order
  • Water bill with current address
  • Electricity bill with current address
  • Certificate from employer on letterhead with a seal and signature
  • Passport of the spouse
  • Parents’ passport
  • Age proof- One can submit any of the following documents as age proof for passport:
  • Birth certificate issued by the municipal authority or any other office authorized to issue the birth certificate.
  • School leaving certificate/ Secondary school leaving certificate.
  • Certificate sworn before a magistrate.

Proof of Date of Birth

  • Birth certificate issued by Municipal Authority OR any other authorized office which handles task of issuing Birth and Death Certificate.
  • School leaving certificate.
  • Illiterate or semi-illiterate (less than 5th standard) can submit an affidavit made before a Magistrate/Notary. Specimen of this certificate is available as Annexure A at the officiate portal of Passport Seva.

Additional Documents for Passport Application, in some cases

  • Permanent Account Number or PAN Card
  • Photo Identity Card of educational institute (in case if the applicant is a student).
  • I-Card of your company if you are working.
  • Certificate of Marriage
  • A letter from your Magistrate or MLA or MP.

Then you need documents like age proof, birth certificate, educational qualification, employment details (if any).

Submit that to the nearby passport office (passport seva Kendra) and wait for further instructions regarding your date of interview.
