Trichy, also called the Central region of Tamil Nadu, has recorded the maximum sale of Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGB) in the country during the period of Akshya Tritiya. The record sale occurred in April when the subscription had opened for first series of SGB-2017-18.
Akshya Tritiya, an annual spring time festival among Hindus and Jains, is considered to be an auspicious time for buying gold or property.
Almost 20 kg gold sold in 7 days
According to data from the Postal Department, Trichy witnessed a sale of 19.30 kilograms of gold worth Rs. 5.60 Crore in a period of only seven days. Moreover, the post office of the Central region sold the highest volume of gold bonds when compared to other postal regions of India. A total of 3201 applicants have invested their money in the scheme.
Special counters for July bonds
Special counters had been opened at 24 head post offices in Trichy for the sale of SGB-2017-18 Series II between 10th to 14th July. The issue price of the bond for this round is fixed at Rs. 2780 per gram, after a discount of Rs. 50.
