MGNREGA Contributed To Poverty Eradication
Minister appreciates MGNREGA's role
Rural Development Minister Ram Kirpal Yadav said that Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA) has played an important role in eradicating poverty in India.
Study report by NCAER
Yadav’s statement was based on a study report titled “Poverty reduction due to MGNREGA†by National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER). According to this report, MGNREGA’s contribution in reducing poverty is around 32%. The scheme prevented 14 million people from falling into poverty. Poverty among adivasis was reduced by 27.6% while among Dalits it was reduced by 37.6%
Role of states and UTs
There is a need to create more awareness about the provisions of the scheme and to provide enough employment opportunities for the rural poor under MGNREGA. For this reason states and Union Territories (UTs) have been directed to begin information, education and communication campaigns. This will help in spreading knowledge about the provisions of the Act. All states and UTs have also been requested to expand the scope and coverage of demand registration system. This will ensure that demand for work under MGNREGA does not go unregistered.
