Aadhaar Card Compulsory for LPG Connection
Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana
Last year the government had launched the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. This scheme seeks to provide free LPG connection to poor women within three years. In October 2016, the government had made Aadhaar card number compulsory for all to get LPG subsidies.
According to a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on March 6, the Aadhaar/ unique identification number requirement has now been extended to women of Below Poverty Line (BPL) households. These women will now need to have an Aadhaar card in order to avail free cooking gas (LPG) connection under the scheme. They have been asked to apply for Aadhaar card by May 31. The Ministry has directed the state-owned fuel retailing firms to provide assistance in the Aadhaar enrolment process. The Ministry notification also stated that the use of Aadhaar card as identity document will simplify the process of delivering government goods and services. It will also lead to greater transparency and efficiency since Aadhaar will do away with the need for multiple identification documents.
Aadhaar will simplify procedures
A beneficiary under the scheme who has enrolled for Aadhaar card can now apply for LPG subsidy by simply providing the enrolment ID slip or a copy of it. In addition a government identification document like passport, driving license, election voter ID etc will also have to be provided.
