Aadhaar Enrolment Deadline Extended for MGNREGA Beneficiaries
The Government has announced that it may consider extending the deadline for Aadhaar enrolment of individuals registered under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA).
Narendra Singh Tomar, Minister of Rural Development stated that on January 3, his ministry had notified that persons enrolled under MGNREGA and not having Aadhaar card must enrol by March 31. Tomar however stated that Aadhaar was not mandatory for MGNREGA. The Ministry had issued the notification taking into consideration the Supreme Court’s direction as well as the Parliament’s legislation in this matter. He added that as far as the March 31 deadline is considered, it is not the final date for enrolment. If the states require more time the deadline can be extended.
Greater transparency expected
Ram Kirpal Yadav, Minister of State for Rural Development added that 80% of the people have opted for Aadhaar and women’s participation in the scheme has also grown. Yadav said that by introducing Aadhaar the Government is trying to bring in greater transparency in MGNREGA’s implementation.
