The christian-majority Mizoram called for a state-wide boycott of International Yoga Day citing Yoga’s incompatibility with Christian beliefs. However, Mizoram observed June 21 to mark a Healthy Mizoram Campaign. The Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee, a conglomerate of 15 major churches, boycotted the practice of Yoga saying it is “dipped in Hinduism”.
Officials in Rajasthan’s Dausa have painted walls of people receiving ration under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), with the message “I am poor and I receive ration from NFSA.” According to reports, around 50,000 homes are being painted with the message, which the people have called shameful. Also, an official said it was done to identify BPL and NFSA families.
The Delhi Metro has started its own smart watches, Watch2Pay, which will help commuters’ faster entry and exit at metro stations. The watches, made in partnership with an Austrian company, will have a sim card inside for recharging, but won’t require mobile network to function. According to reports, the watch will be priced at 6,000 rupees per year.

On the national highway in Maharashtra near Thane a clash between protesting farmers and the police took place on a national highway today. Several policemen have been injured, sources said. Additional forces have been deployed in the area. The farmers were holding protests over the Navy walling up an old British-period aerodrome in the area. The 1600-acre premise belongs to the Navy. But over the years, it had been inhabited by the locals. The farmers had petitioned the authorities that the land be given to them. After the authorities refused, protests started.
Robert Pious, one of the convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has asked the Tamil Nadu government for mercy killing. He commented, “I’ve been in prison for more than 27 years now…I can understand the intention of the government and as none of my family members have come to see me, I don’t find anymore purpose in life.”
Days after the central government roped in actor Amitabh Bachchan to promote GST, the opposition Congress on June 21, 2017 told Mr Bachchan to refrain from doing so or face protests. Mumbai Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam commented, “He should not promote GST in its current form. There is already anger among traders against it.”
The Army has once again declined to use an indigenously built assault rifle over poor quality and ineffective fire power. The rejection has happened for the second year in a row. The 7.62×51 mm guns built by the Rifle Factory Ishapore were rejected by the Army after they failed the firing tests last week. Last year, the Army had rejected another indigenously built assault rifle over quality standards.
On June 21, 2017 Nepal’s Department of Drug Administration asked Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved to recall six of its medical products as they were found to be of “substandard quality”. Correspondence from Patanjali in this regard is still awaited. Notably, a reply to recent RTI in India revealed that nearly 40% of Ayurveda products, including items from Patanjali, were of substandard quality.
A man stabbed his wife 35 times with a knife at their home in Delhi on the morning of 21 June, 2017 over an alleged extra-marital affair and injured their 15-year-old son who tried to save her. The man’s wife died and his son, now stable, is receiving treatment at a hospital. The police are searching for the accused who is absconding.
