NBCC to develop 10 railway stations like airports by 2020

The facelift of Indian Railways doesn’t seem to stop anytime soon. In the latest development, ten railway stations are set to be redeveloped with airport-like amenities. The selected railways stations are spread across the country and an investment of Rs 5,000 crore would be made for the facelift. The deadline for completion of work is 2020.

NBCC’s Role

The redevelopment work will be done by a state-run infra arm NBCC.

The project will be carried out through self-financing model via land monetisation. The monetisation will be done via “commercial exploitation” of the land which will be provided by the railways. The commercial rights will be given for a period of 45 years. But NBCC is mooting to increase the lease period so that the projects become more viable.

The Rail Land Development Authority and NBCC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for this project.

Along with the stations’ project, NBCC is taking charge of redeveloping government-owned colonies in Delhi.

NBCC built the houses for top bureaucrats with the cost of Rs 1,700 crore. The money came after selling a small piece of land to Leela Palace Hotels at Africa Avenue Marg in New Delhi.

Ten stations

The 10 stations that are ready to get airport-like facilities are:

  • Delhi Sarai Rohilla
  • Lucknow Junction
  • Gomti Nagar station, Lucknow
  • Kota
  • Tirupati
  • Nellore
  • Ernakulam Puducherry
  • Madgaon
  • Thane

Work starts by Dec end

The work at a few stations will start by December-end or early next year.

NBCC Chairman, A K Mittal, said they are aiming to finish the project in “two to two-and-a-half years”.


The infra arm will develop platforms, lounges, ticketing counters, parking and other amenities. There will be designated arrival and departure terminals.

The hotels, malls, multiplexes, corporates and space for for residential purpose may also emerge on lease purpose.

More stations to get the facelift

The Railways has lined up 400 stations for redevelopment on a public-private-partnership basis.
