Congress will start nation-wide protest against the increase in duty on petrol and diesel
On 15 September, 2017, the Congress party declared that it would introduce a nationwide protest against the sudden increase in central excise duty on petrol and diesel which has led to a major hike in their prices. Blaming the BJP government of “looting” the common people and “profiteering” at their cost, Congress’s senior spokesperson Ajay Maken commented that the party would persevere in its revolt “until this draconian taxation regime is withdrawn”. He also made it clear that in every 100 rupees of petrol, 51.78 rupees was in taxes and 44.40 rupees for diesel. He asked for a white paper on taxes imposed on fuels and the gains made by the government, and commented that the party would launch agitations throughout the country. The agitation would commence on September 20 from the national capital.
