Vadodara To Get First-in-India Rail and Transport University

In what can prove to be a giant leap in maintaining high standard rail network, the Cabinet has approved to set up country’s first National Rail and Transport University (NRTU). The university will come up in Vadodara, Gujarat.

The approval for the project was pending for the past three years. The provision for the university was included in the Railway Budget in 2014. The decision to start the university on the NAIR campus in Vadodara was taken in 2016.

The NRTU will be set up as a ‘Deemed to Be University’. It will be formed under de novo category as per the UGC (Institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2016.

Government is said to complete all approvals by April 2018 and would launch the first academic program in July 2018.

Ownership and Board of Management

The ministry will form a not-for-profit company under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013. And the university will be managed by that company.  It will also provide financial and infrastructural support to the university. It will also be responsible to appoint Chancellor and Pro- Chancellor of the university.

The board of management will comprise of professionals and academics. It will be independent of the Managing Company and hold full autonomy to perform the academic and administrative work.

Modern training

The university would use latest pedagogy and technology applications such as Radio Frequency, satellite based tracking, Identification and Artificial Intelligence to boost on-the-job performance and productivity.

PM Narendra Modi announced in 2014 that India needed a railway university for the research and modernisation of the country's archaic railway system. The rail university would also improve the transport infrastructure in general.
