NRIs and PIOs are not eligible under Aadhaar
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has recently said that NRIs and PIOs are not eligible under Aadhar Act and thus, do not need to link their bank accounts and other services with Aadhaar.
It has further instructed the various implementation agencies to adhere to this protocol by defining a verification mechanism for such individuals. NRIs and PIOs are not eligible to enrol for Aadhar.
It said the Prevention of Money laundering Rules 2017 and the Income Tax Act clearly stipulate that the linking of bank accounts and PAN respectively, "is for those persons who are eligible to enrol for Aadhaar".
The UAD took note of the matter of problems faced by NRIs or PIOs representatives to link Aadhar with their bank account. Several representations have been received by the UAD on the problems. Hence the need to clarify the matter in the media and the public.
The issue has risen since some departments and implementing agencies were contacting the NRIs/OCIs/PIOs to submit their Aadhar copy for availing services and benefits. The implementing agency has been further instructed to create a mechanism to ascertain the authenticity of the status of such NRIs/OCIs/PIOs, smelling trouble.
